Samsung NC215: Samsung Combines Solar Energy with Portable Computing

The Sun might yet have saved the netbook from an impending tablet-driven euthanasia.

While some quarters have been trumpeting the netbook's so-called inevitable doom, along comes Samsung with the NC215 solar-powered netbook.

Loaded with a solar panel on its lid, the netbook can convert two hours of sunlight into an hour of netbook operation.

While its specs may not be enough to convince the casual tablet user to leave their iPads or X-pads behind, most users in developing countries and those who love the outdoors as much as their iPhones will certainly fall in love with the NC215. Or they might find it sufficiently presentable to bring home and meet mom.

The NC215 comes empowered by the following specifications that include a 10.1-inch (1024 x 600pixels) screen, 1.66GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor, 1GB DDR3 RAM, and 250GB (5400RPM) hard drive.

Connectivity options include 80211b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, SDHC card reader, VGA, Ethernet, and three USB ports. Nothing fancy, although with that lineup of features, the NC215 could have had put to shame some high-end desktop PCs from a couple of years or so ago.

The netbook comes with Windows 7 Starter Edition, which should make most netbook users happy.

Other highlights of the netbook's list of "creativity," include the Fast Start function, which lets the netbook save its current state and go to sleep mode whenever the cover is closed. This is something nice for some users who are in a hurry or are too impatient to turn off the unit properly.

One more thing, the solar netbook can also charge smartphones or other mobile gadgets even when it is turned off or in power-saving status.

Not bad. Not bad all. In fact, this corner says: "Good job, Samsung!"
